Clifon, Beavers & Scouts

At one stage, there were up to 11 scout packs on Clifton Estate, and scouts was one of the first groups to be established when families first started moving here. Now, there is just the first Clifton pack which has amalgamated with around four others, the oldest being the 36th Clifton, which is 60 years old. This amalgamation can be seen on their multi-coloured striped neckties, each colour representing a different group. Staffed by volunteers, they run weekly session for […]

Workshops on Clifton Estate

For the past few months, I’ve had the pleasure of working with staff and pupils from The Farnborough Academy, Nottingham to explore the area around their school using photography. The 22 students are studying for GCSE Fine Art and Photography. Each week, I’ve spent two hours with them. We’ve got out into the community and either pre-arranged shoots with local people or approached people in the street to ask to photograph them. Photographing strangers can be daunting when you’re an […]

Young people visiting National Portrait Gallery and viewing the Nottingham collection, 2019

Creative Connections

The first Creative Connections project outside of London kicked off today. I’m excited to be working with The Farnborough Academy, Nottingham, National Portrait Gallery and Nottingham Contemporary on a new commission. Today was the first time all the partners met. National Portrait Gallery had arranged a fantastic day for the pupils which included a tour of the collection, talks and a display of sitters in their collection from Nottingham. These include photographs of Laura Knight, Alan Sillitoe, Carl Froch, Samantha […]

New search for Ex Warner Residents

Myself and Lucy Harrison have received Arts Council to continue the Ex Warner project which we exhibited in 2014. This year we will be exhibiting at Vestry House Museum  in 2016. The exhibition will feature new material, ephemera, photographs and oral histories. If you know anyone who rented directly from the Warner’s or any elderly Warner residents, please get in touch.  Whilst trawling the internet for mentions of any of the Warner Roads in Walthamstow or Leyton last year, I […]

Launderettes in the news

Dave Hill wrote a great article in The Guardian recently following the news that the number of launderettes in London has gone down to just a few hundred. It prompted many people to tweet with stories of launderettes in their own neighbourhoods and also the BBC contacted me to do a short interview with some of the owners and customers at the launderettes I photographed at. During the interviews, which were conducted by Charlotte Frank, an elderly woman sat with […]

Denise St Aubyn Hubbard

I was very sad to hear that Denise St Aubyn Hubbard had passed away aged 91. This incredible woman lived an inspiring life and I was privileged to photograph her in 2012 as part of my 1948 Olympians project. Denise came to my attention as she was a high diver in the 1948 London Olympics. When myself and fellow photographer, Rachel Poulton, went to photograph her in the spring of 2012, we came away in awe of how much she’d packed […]

Cul de Sacs & Dead Ends

Today I drove around Arbury & Kingshedges again. Not knowing the area I just drove rather randomly exploring different streets. Every direction I take seems to end in a dead end, it’s really disorientating. They’re all quite different, there doesn’t seem to be a pattern to them so I must look up on a map if there’s any sense of order from a bird eye view. Cul de Sacs were introduced into the UK with a change in the Hampstead […]
