1948 Olympians

EXHIBITION, ORAL HISTORY & PUBLICATION

A self-initiated project and exhibition which toured the UK during the 2012 Olympics and is currently being shown at Open Eye Gallery, Liverpool as part of A Portrait Of…. (2 August – 29 July 2019).

1948 was the last time the Olympics was held in London. The contrast is stark; London was recovering from war, athletes weren’t paid, were training on rations whilst working full-time and most had to hand sew their own kits….. from 2007 to 2012 I met, photographed and recorded interviews with the British Olympic Team from the 1948 Olympics. The exhibition toured the UK in 2012.

The project includes: Audrey Beever (Gymnastics), Cathy Brown (Swimming), Edwin Bowey (Wrestling), Jimmy McColl (Football), John Peake (Hockey), John & Dorothy Parlett (Athletics), Tommy Godwin (Cycling), Gordon Thomas (Cycling), Dame Mary Glen-Haig (Fencing), Donald Scott (Boxing), Dorothy Tyler (Athletics), George Weedon (Gymnastics), Roy Romain (Swimming), Ron Cooper (Boxing), Denise St Aubyn Hubbard (High Diving).
