At Home with Morris
I never expected to exhibit this series of work, or even imagined that it would be seen publicly.
I started thinking about photographing homes with William Morris interiors when attending meetings of the Friends of the William Morris Gallery. Every month the group would meet in different committee members homes; each month would be a similarly amazing interior – each with their own particular take on Morris style, personalising it to tastes.
It started me thinking about many things; taste, class, interior design fashions and with these thoughts in mind, I began asking around and gradually collected more and more interiors.
I started this in around 2007 and what’s been interesting is that since then, Morris has seen a resurgence and again his designs are back in fashion – perhaps it’s a backlash to the ‘beige’ trend or to IKEA. Due to the cost of Morris’s designs, the newer schemes seem to often include just a ‘feature’ wall, whereas the older schemes are more all encompassing.
This work was shown at both Penny Fielding’s Gallery and Colyer Bristow, both in 2013.
